트레퍼네이션 TREPANATION
트레퍼네이션은 두개골에 구멍을 뚫는, 인류에게 알려진 가장 오래된 외과 수술 중 하나다. 신석기 시대의 두개골에서도 그 흔적이 발견된다. 과거에는 두통·간질·정신 질환을 치료하거나, 머릿속의 ‘악령’을 내보내기 위해 행해졌다. 만화 《호문쿨루스》의 주인공은 바로 이 시술을 받은 뒤부터, 남들이 보지 못하는 것을 보기 시작한다.
Trepanation — boring a hole into the skull — is one of the oldest surgical procedures known to humankind, with traces found even in Neolithic skulls. It was once performed to treat headaches, epilepsy and mental illness, or to release the “evil spirits” trapped inside the head. In «Homunculus», the protagonist begins to see what others cannot only after undergoing it.
